Consultant, Facilitator, Trainer, and Presenter

Our focus is on process and people. We help you answer these questions:

How do we ...
  • Know what’s important?
  • Make decisions?
  • Communicate one-to-one?
  • Communicate as a group?
  • Prioritize?
  • Evaluate performance?
  • Evaluate how workplace behavior affects numbers and outcomes?
  • Change behavior at work? (Ours, and others'.)
  • Improve those processes?
Our presentations and training workshops are always interactive and learner-focused, using real situations, solutions, and ideas for improvement.

Professional and Personal Career Planning We evaluate trends in the veterinary profession and how those trends affect career opportunities for veterinarians and the veterinary job market. We have developed a thorough knowledge of all career paths open to veterinarians, including the current and future outlook for growth in specific areas, based on national and international trends. We assist associations and individuals in evaluating the effects of these trends and in determining appropriate positive action steps. Dr. Smith's classic "Career Choices for Veterinarians" has helped veterinarians, from graduation through midlife crisis and retirement, to find fulfilling work that fits their lives.

Life-Career Balance; Gender and Economics

Dr. Smith has given presentations worldwide about issues regarding women, economics, and work. She has published in-depth articles about gender issues in veterinary medicine, and is known for her ability to draw men and women of all ages into an intelligent, stimulating discussion of issues, answers, and possibilities.

We have a thorough understanding of the independent contractor status of relief veterinarians. Dr. Smith successfully presented the case of the relief veterinarian as an independent contractor to the state of Washington (Employment Security and Labor & Industries boards, responsible for Workers' Comp and Unemployment insurance coverage). This presentation and discussion was followed by the publication of guidelines to be used by relief veterinarians to determine their IC status in the state (1992; successfully challenged [upheld] in 2002.) The Relief Veterinarian's Manual (Now FlexVet) is purchased by many law firms as a reference guide.

Publishing Consultant

We share knowledge of copyright issues (including electronic copyright), contracts, book publication and marketing, self-publishing, and other author/editor/publisher issues. Dr. Smith has worked with large publishers (Dell, Simon & Schuster) and also has self-published many books, doing all work from writing to typesetting, layout, and preparation for the printer, followed by marketing and distribution.

We can help you create a book, from start to finish. We assist veterinarians and others serving the profession in creating their own books, including book copyediting, layout, and typesetting. Dr. Smith understands printing and printers' requirements (cost-effective number of pages, appropriate fonts, computer compatibility [software, printer], electronic transfer of data). She keeps abreast of developments in electronic publishing and print-on-demand services. We can help you evaluate return on investment, break-even point, marketing strategies, and sales potential; and to understand niche markets.

We can help you work with bookstores (online and traditional) and with book distributors (understanding bookseller/publisher discounts, setting sales/returns policies), and to establish relationships with major book distributors, libraries, and companies for bulk book sales.
